About Me

Elihu Genmyo Smith: I began my Zen training in 1974 at the Zen Studies Society in New York with Soen Nakagawa Roshi and Eido Shimano Roshi. I continued training at Zen Center of Los Angeles and was ordained a Buddhist priest by Hakuyu Maezumi Roshi in 1979. After completing formal koan study with Maezumi Roshi, in 1984 I continued training with Charlotte Jōko Beck at Zen Center of San Diego and received Dharma transmission (shiho) and authorization to teach from Joko in 1992. I am a co-founder of the Ordinary Mind Zen School and resident teacher of the Prairie Zen Center, www.prairiezen.org., living in Champaign, Illinois with my wife Karen Cho-on Etheridge. We have 2 children, Sara, who is doing a D. Phil. at Oxford, and Gabriel, who is at University of Washington in Seattle in a National Student Exchange program. I am the author of Ordinary Life, Wondrous Life which is published by the Prairie Zen Center, and Everything Is the Way: Ordinary Mind Zen, published by Shambhala Publ. in June 2012.
